Introduction

Nothing on the Old Rail Trail will hurt you. It runs 43 km from Athlone on the Shannon to Mullingar, on the bed of the old Midland Great Western Railway line. Railway engineers did not build gradients if they could avoid them, so the whole thing is close to level and the surface is good. That combination makes it one of the few routes in the country a seven-year-old can do end to end.

Bike hire is available at both ends and at Moate in the middle. The rest of this page covers where to stop, what to bring, and how to split the trail if you would rather take two days over it.

Attractions Along the Way

Athlone Castle

The castle sits on the Shannon bank and has interactive displays and a kids’ trail. Worth half an hour before or after the ride.

Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park (Moate)

A family-friendly hub with a playground, outdoor art, and a café. The park’s wetland boardwalk is perfect for spotting birds and dragonflies.

Streamstown Stone-Arch Bridges

Three masonry arches spanning the old railway line. Nearly everyone stops here, and the children will want to know what ran underneath.

Hill of Uisneach

Just a short side-track from Castletown, this ancient ceremonial site is steeped in myth. Bring a picnic and let the children explore the cairns and stone circles.

Royal Canal Greenway (Mullingar)

At Newbrook the trail joins the Royal Canal Greenway. Rent a kayak or paddleboard for a few hours, or simply stroll along the water’s edge before heading back to town.

Family-Friendly Activities

  • Nature scavenger hunt: Create a list of birds, insects and plant species to spot in Crosswood Bog and the canal tow-path.
  • Storytelling at Uisneach: Share legends of the High Kings and the goddess Ériu. It also buys everyone ten minutes of sitting down.
  • Picnic challenges: Each family member prepares a snack; the most creative dish wins a “greenway badge.”
  • Bike-maintenance workshop: Many hire shops offer a quick tutorial on fixing a flat, a useful skill for young riders.

Safety, Etiquette & Practical Tips

  1. Helmet on at all times: many hire shops provide them free of charge.
  2. Wear high-visibility clothing: even though the greenway is traffic-free, cyclists travel at speed, especially e-bikes.
  3. Stay on the path: respect the protected stone bridges and wildlife habitats.
  4. Leave no trace: take all litter home; use designated bins at villages.
  5. Follow the sign-posting: distance markers are in kilometres; note the nearest access point in case of fatigue or a change of plans.
  6. Emergency contacts: 999/112 for emergencies; local Garda stations in Athlone and Mullingar for non-urgent assistance.
  7. Bike lock: most villages have secure bike racks; lock your bike when stopping at cafés or attractions.

Take two days over it if you have small children and want the Hill of Uisneach detour as well. One day is plenty otherwise, though a 43 km out and back is a long way for young legs. Book hire ahead in July and August.
