Cycling the Fermanagh Lakelands
Five routes around Lough Erne, from an 18 km lap at Castle Archdale to the 160 km Kingfisher Trail. Grades, bike hire and the months to aim for.
Introduction
Fermanagh is mostly water. Lough Erne dominates the county and the roads follow its edges, which keeps the gradients honest until you turn inland towards the limestone at Cuilcagh. After that it gets serious. There is forest gravel above Belcoo, tarmac around the islands, and an easy paved lap at Castle Archdale for anyone riding with children. Late spring and early autumn are the windows worth booking.
Why the Fermanagh Lakelands?
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Landscape | Over 150 km of lakes, rivers and glacial valleys, dominated by Lough Erne (the largest lake system in Northern Ireland). |
| Geology | Part of the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark, limestone pavements, karst features and the famous Magho Cliffs (300 m high). |
| Heritage | Neolithic court tombs, 17th-century castles, historic estates such as Florence Court and the Marble Arch Caves. |
| Climate | Mild maritime climate; the best riding windows are late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) when temperatures sit between 12-18 °C and rainfall is moderate. |
| Accessibility | Well-signposted routes, ample bike-hire facilities (National Trust, local B&Bs) and a network of public car parks at trailheads. |
Water, wilderness and cultural sites sit close enough together here that the short loops are worth doing as well as the long ones. The county rewards a slow pace.

Navigation & Maps
- Official Geopark maps (PDF), downloadable from cuilcaghlakelands.org; clearly mark the Scarplands Trail and points of interest.
- Komoot: free account gives you turn-by-turn voice navigation; the “Marble Arch Caves & Florence Court” and “Kingfisher Trail” are pre-saved routes.
- Strava: check the “Fermanagh Lakelands” segment for recent rider data (average speed 20 km/h on gravel).
- Offline: download the OSNI (Ordnance Survey NI) 1:25 000 Explorer map for the whole county; it works without cellular signal.
Safety & Sustainability
- Traffic: most routes are on low-traffic country roads; still wear high-visibility clothing.
- Forestry Vehicles: the Scarplands Trail runs through working forest; obey any “stop/slow” signs and give way to heavy machinery.
- Wildlife: keep a respectful distance, especially during breeding season (March-July).
- Leave No Trace: pack out all litter, stay on marked paths, and use designated picnic areas.
- Emergency: the nearest ambulance station is in Enniskillen; carry a fully charged phone and note the emergency number 999 (or 112).

Conclusion
The Lakelands cover a lot of ground for a county this size. From the 60 km of forest gravel on the Scarplands down to the easy lap at Castle Archdale, there is something here for most levels of fitness. Bike hire is straightforward to arrange, the accommodation network is small but reliable, and the waymarking holds up.
Take a jacket. Take a spare tube. Once you leave the Belcoo trailhead on the Scarplands there is nowhere to buy either.
